As a Parent of a Young Child, Here Are 10 Things I Want to Know About My Church's Children's Ministry

Parents often have important questions about their children’s ministry, but they might not always know how to ask them. Likewise, ministry leaders may sometimes lack answers because they haven’t fully considered these concerns. As a parent of a young child, a ministry leader, and a child safety professional, I’ve compiled ten essential questions I would ask my children’s ministry.

1. How Safe is the Environment?

Safety is my top priority. I want to know that my child is in a secure environment where all areas are visible, well-lit, and regularly monitored. Closed doors and hidden spaces raise concerns—transparency is key.

2. What Safety Protocols Are in Place?

I need to know that your ministry has well-established safety protocols. How are volunteers screened? What are the drop-off and pick-up procedures? Knowing these details reassures me that my child is in good hands.

3. Are Volunteers Trained, Background-Checked and Reference-Checked?

It’s important that those interacting with my child are thoroughly vetted. I’d like to know if volunteers undergo background checks, reference checks, and receive training on child safety and protection.

4. What is Your Policy on Emergencies?

Accidents happen, and I need to know that your team is prepared. What’s your plan for medical emergencies or other urgent situations? Clear communication and swift action are vital.

5. How Are Behavioral Issues Handled?

Children are still learning how to navigate social situations. I want to know that your ministry handles behavioral issues with care and understanding, promoting a positive experience for all children.

6. What’s the Child-to-Volunteer Ratio?

Knowing how many children each volunteer is responsible for helps me gauge the level of attention my child will receive. A low child-to-volunteer ratio means more individualized care.

7. How Do You Communicate With Parents?

Regular updates and open communication are important to me. I appreciate knowing what my child is learning and any concerns that may arise. How do you keep parents in the loop?

8. What Spiritual Growth Opportunities Are Available?

I want my child to grow in their faith. What activities and lessons are in place to help nurture their spiritual development? Are there age-appropriate ways for my child to connect with God?

9. How Do You Handle Sensitive Topics?

Life can be challenging, and kids may have questions about difficult subjects. I want to know that your ministry approaches sensitive topics with care, aligning with our family's values.

10. What Makes Your Ministry Unique?

Every church’s children’s ministry has something special to offer. What sets yours apart? Whether it’s a unique curriculum, a focus on community service, or a warm and welcoming atmosphere, I want to know why your ministry is the right fit for our family.
